Pet proprietors cautioned after report of wolves going after pet on southerly Vancouver Island

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service and a wild animals training and studying workforce on southerly Vancouver Island are encouraging people to utilize further preventative measure with their pet canine after a report of wolves going after a launched pet within the Metchosin/East Sooke location early Monday early morning.

Wild Wise Society knowledgeable CBC the report referred “two or three wolves.”

“There’s really not a lot of clarity on how many animals were involved in the incident and how far [the dog] was followed,” acknowledged Mollie Cameron, Wild Wise’s head of state.

“I can provide that the resident returned to their home with their dog and nobody was injured.”

The Conservation Officer Services (COS) knowledgeable CBC it explored the case. In a declaration, it acknowledged that wolves prevail on Vancouver Island and will be come throughout in wild and nation setups any time.

“Wolves are territorial animals and during the incident [Monday] they exhibited natural territorial behaviour,” acknowledged the COS.

Cameron acknowledged whereas wolves tend to be evasive and forestall human beings, it’s not fully unusual for a wolf to return near a launched pet.

“Wolves specifically try to elicit a flight response from their prey because it gives them an advantage of the chase. Not many things can outrun a wolf, especially not a human or oftentimes not dogs,” she acknowledged.

“If you do encounter a wolf with your dog, the best thing to do is just stay still, remain calm, and make lots of noise. More often than not, a wolf is going to lose interest in not being able to elicit that flight response, and they’ll likely retreat.”
