Coal Plant Sites Eyed for Nuclear Repurposing
New Delhi– In a bid to bolster its atomic energy capability, a government panel has identified three deactivated coal-fired nuclear power plant sites for potential nuclear jobs. The move lines up with India’s goal of getting to 100 GWe of nuclear power by 2047
- Site Choice: A Central Electricity Authority (CEA) sub-committee shortlisted the sites, focusing on land and water schedule.
- Capacity: Two websites appropriate for 700 MWe reactors, while one is taken into consideration for smaller sized 220 MWe reactors.
- Exclusion Zones: Present 1 km exclusion zone needs present an obstacle, with propositions to decrease them under evaluation.
- SHANTI Act: The 2025 Lasting Harnessing and Development of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Act made it possible for economic sector involvement.
